Estuary Bowl

A thrown stoneware bowl in a harbour green-grey glaze.

The Estuary glaze takes its colour from the water outside the studio at Wapping Wharf: muddy, green, grey and never quite the same twice. It sits on a round, generous bowl that's happy holding soup, salad, cereal or a heap of clementines on the counter.

Made in a batch of twenty

How the bowl is thrown, glazed and fired, and how to look after it.

Thrown

Imogen wedges the stoneware clay by hand, then throws the Estuary Bowls on the wheel one after another, twenty in a row. Once they're leather-hard, each one is trimmed to give it a neat foot to stand on.

Glazed

The whole batch is glazed together, so the twenty bowls come out as a family of almost-twins. The glaze stops in a wavy line above the foot, leaving a band of raw clay you can feel under your fingers.

Fired

Then the batch goes into the kiln. The glaze moves a little as it melts, pooling deeper in one bowl and thinner on the rim of another, which is why no two Estuary Bowls are quite alike.

Looked after

Use it every day; that's what it's for. Warm soapy water and a soft sponge keep it happy, and the unglazed foot may want a mat on a polished table. There's more in our care guide, and the long story of a pot lives on our process page.

A note on price and sizes

This page is built to show a price in pounds and the exact measurements of each size, but neither was part of the brief for this site. Rather than guess, the bowl says "Price on request" and the sizes are listed as small, medium and large until Imogen adds the real figures. The basket button records your choice on this page; checkout needs a shop system connected to the site. Until then, write to hello@terraandton.co.uk to order.
