Use it, wash it, love it

Our stoneware is made to be used, not kept for best. A little common sense keeps it going for years of breakfasts.

Looking after your stoneware

Every Terra & Ton piece is thrown, glazed and fired by hand in a batch of twenty. That makes it sturdy, everyday stoneware, but it's still a handmade thing, and handmade things like a bit of kindness.

Using it

  • Fill it with soup, salad, porridge, tea, flowers or a pile of lemons. Daily use is the whole point.
  • Go easy on sudden changes of temperature. Don't take a piece straight from the fridge into a hot oven, or pour boiling water into a cold mug that's been sitting on a frosty windowsill.
  • Want to know whether a particular piece is happy in the microwave, oven or dishwasher? Ask us before you try. We'd rather answer an email than hear about a sad cracked bowl.

Washing it

  • Warm soapy water and a soft sponge are all it needs.
  • Skip the wire wool and scouring powders; they can dull the glaze over time.
  • Tea and coffee rings come off with a soak in warm water and a little bicarbonate of soda.
  • Let pieces dry fully before stacking them away, especially the raw clay foot.

The unglazed foot

The band of bare clay at the bottom of each pot is left unglazed on purpose: it's what the pot stands on in the kiln. It can feel a little rough, so pop a mat or coaster under it on a polished table, and lift rather than drag pieces across each other when stacking.

Little quirks

A thumbprint by the foot, a glaze that pooled deeper on one side, a rim that's not perfectly level with its neighbour: these aren't faults, they're the marks of a pot made by a person rather than a machine. No two pieces in a batch of twenty are exactly alike.

If something goes wrong

Chipped a rim on the edge of the sink? It happens to the best of us. Write to hello@terraandton.co.uk and tell us what happened, and we'll do our best to help. If you've changed your mind about an unused piece, you can send it back within 30 days.
