Stoneware for soup, toast and Tuesday.

Terra & Ton is Imogen Hale's pottery studio at Wapping Wharf in Bristol. Since 2018 we've been throwing and glazing bowls, mugs, plates and vases by hand, twenty at a time, for tables that actually get used.

Nothing here is too good for the dishwasher queue or the Sunday crumble. Pick it up, fill it, chip it on the edge of the sink one day and love it anyway.

One batch. Twenty pots.

Twenty, then the wheel goes quiet.

Every piece at Terra & Ton is thrown and glazed in a small batch of twenty. Imogen throws them in one go, they dry together, take their glaze together and come out of the kiln together, a little family of almost-twins.

When a batch has found its homes, that's it until the next twenty. So every piece in the shop wears a small-batch badge, and plenty are made to order: we throw yours in the next batch and post it once it's cool enough to hold.

Clay, wheel, glaze, fire.

Four stages, a lot of patience and quite a bit of mud. Here's the short version.

  1. Clay

Stoneware clay is wedged by hand until it's smooth and free of air.

  2. Throwing

Each pot is thrown on the wheel, then trimmed once it's leather-hard.

  3. Glazing

The whole batch of twenty is dipped together, so the colours sit as a family.

  4. Firing

Into the kiln they go. Opening the door afterwards never gets less exciting.
